Sitting here watching 90’s Nick, just as I was exactly one year ago.
And it’s crazy, thinking about where I was in my life a year ago and where I am now.
A lot is different, even though a lot feels exactly the same. But I know things are on their way to a very permanent change. Still, I’m feeling familiar in a foreign way. But really, I don’t think I feel familiar at all. I think I want to feel familiar so I’ve made myself believe that some things are still the same.
But that’s silly. Everything’s changed. And I didn’t even realize it until I wrote all this shit out.
I’m from Texas, dude… does that tell you anything? Uh, a big ‘fuck yeah,’ served on a bed of ‘fuck yeah,’ rinsed down with a big cup of ‘fuck yeah.’ I think there’s a lot of shit that needs to be sorted out in this country- and the world, for that matter. Lotta people do shit, there’s no accountability… Yeah, I believe in justice. I don’t believe in people doing heinous crimes and getting out in six months on probation, having the ability to do it again. I don’t believe in that shit- at all.

“Do I get stress headaches at work? Yes, definitely. From the moment I get in, it’s “Denise we need this! Denise we need that!” Which is stressful… ‘cause my name is Linda. Denise is the other black woman that works here. By 10am, someone in the copy room makes a joke about Kobe Bryant, and everyone looks at me to make sure it’s ok. And I smile like it’s ok. But really, my head and neck are starting to throb. Then I spend the rest of my afternoon training my interns, and answering their questions, like, “Yes, black people use shampoo”, and, “No, I don’t know any good reggae clubs around here”, and, “Yes, Condoleezza Rice is very articulate, why do you sound so surprised?” And, “No, I can’t tell you where to buy weed!” And that’s when I reach for Excedrin.”
